New Orleans, La. - The Coastal Carolina University men’s and women’s cross country teams have been named Division I All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track &Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

A total of 217 women’s programs and 160 men’s programs across the nation earned the honor for compiling a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better, and starting at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championships.

For the Chanticleer men, who posted a team GPA of 3.12, the honor marks the third consecutive year, and ninth time overall, that Coastal has received All-Academic status. The Chants finished fifth in the Big South in 2013, led by All-Conference juniors Joseph Keitt and Evan Niciphor and the 2013 Big South Men’s Freshman of the Year, Dan Riff. Niciphor additionally earned a spot on the conference’s All-Academic Team.

The Chanticleer women finished the season with a team GPA of 3.28 and were one of five Big South women’s programs to receive All-Academic Honors. The Chants won the 2013 Big South championship for a conference-record 13th time this past season. Letitia Saayman was named the Big South Runner of the Year, Kyla van Graan received the conference’s Freshman of the Year award and head coach Alan Connie was named Big South Coach of the Year for the 13th time in his career.

In total, 11 Big South men’s and women’s cross country programs received USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.
