Boone, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s cross country teams closed out their respective regular seasons Friday afternoon at the Blue Ridge Open. The Chanticleer women’s team placed third of the 14 teams in the women’s 5k while the men finished ninth in the male 8k.
Men’s 8k - 9th of 28 Teams (256 points)
The Chanticleer men ran strong race in the 8k, outscoring five of their Big South Conference rivals including UNC Asheville, Radford, Winthrop, Longwood and Gardner-Webb. Additionally, the top five finishers for the Chants set 8k personal records.
Junior Evan Niciphor paced the Chants, finishing 15th of the 229 runners in 25:13. Fellow junior Joseph Keitt, who has led the Chants in every other meet this season, placed second for the Chants, 19th overall, with a time of 25:15.
Jake and Dan Riff continued to impress in their freshman campaigns, finishing third and fourth, respectively, for the Chants. J. Riff placed 69th overall in 25:58, with D. Riff finishing right behind at 25:58 to place 70th.
Host Appalachian State took the team title, finishing with 102 points. Cedarville claimed second 118 points to placed second, while George Mason finished in a close third with 124. Coastal’s point total was 256.
Senior Matt Brooker of Cedarville won the individual title with an 8k time of 24:27.
Women’s 5k - 3rd of 27 Teams (136 points)
For the third straight meet, and fourth time this season, sophomore Letitia Saayman paced the Chants, placing sixth of the 216 runners in 18:12. Freshman standout Kyla van Graan finished close behind, crossing in 18:19 to placed eighth.
The reliable senior Emily Marchini crossed third for the Chants, 27th overall, in 19:00, marking the third consecutive meet where Saayman, van Graan and Marchini have finished first, second and third, respectively, for the Chanticleers.
Furman edged host Appalachian State 45-64 to take first place. Coastal Carolina finished third in the team results with 136 points. Freshman Allie Buchalski of Furman took the individual title with a time of 17:39.
The Chanticleers will next be in action when they return to Buena Vista, Va. to compete in the Big South Championship. The Chanticleers performed well in their last outing at Buena Vista, with Keitt placing fifth in the men’s 8k and Saayman placing first in the women’s 5k.
