Women's Cross Country Wins Third Consecutive Meet; Men Finish Fifth at Big South Preview

Buena Vista, Va. - For the third straight meet of the season, the Coastal Carolina women’s cross country team took first place as the Chanticleer women outraced Liberty at the VMI Invitational/Big South Preview on Saturday morning. In the male 8k, the Chanticleer men placed fifth of the nine teams. 

Women’s 5k 

After not participating in the Coastal Carolina Invitational last Friday, sophomore Letitia Saayman won the women’s 5k, crossing the line in 18:18.17. As it was the first cross country event held at Vista Links Golf Course, Saayman’s time currently stands as a course record. Saayman, who also won the Carolina Challenge on Aug. 30, has now finished first in both races she has competed in this season. 

Following up her win at the CCU Invitational last week, freshman Kyla van Graan crossed second for the Chants, and fifth overall with a time of 19:02.23. Emily Marchini finished right on the heels of van Graan, crossing sixth overall in 19:04.32. Shelby Nicosia was the fourth Chant to cross, finishing 10th at 19:38.47. 

Janel Reeves finished in 20:10 and Emma Hulburd crossed at 20:12 to place 21st and 22nd, respectively. Jackie Brengal rounded out Coastal’s top seven with a time of 21:00 to place 41st. 

Coastal finished with 43 points to place first of the 10 teams. Liberty took second after outscoring High Point 53-63. Campbell placed fourth with 94 points and UNC Asheville finished fifth with 139. 

Men’s 8k 

For the third consecutive meet, juniors Joseph Keitt and Evan Niciphor finished first and second, respectively, for the Chants. Keitt placed fifth overall with an 8k time of 26:56.75. Niciphor placed 15th after completing the course in 27:42.70. 

Freshman Dan Riff continued to improve upon his success at the Coastal Carolina Invitational last week, crossing 23rd overall in 28:03.94. Jake Riff was the next Chant to finish, coming in at 29:01.54 to place 37th. 

Zach Hensel placed 41st at 29:12.73, Cameron Wells finished 51st at 30:09.17, and Tyler Cummings crossed at 30:19.89 to finish 53rd. 

Liberty handily won the men’s 8k with 19 points. High Point edged Campbell 51-93 to take second place. VMI finished fourth with 115 points, and Coastal Carolina rounded out the top five with 121 points. 

The Chanticleer men and women will next compete in the Paul Short Run on Oct. 5 on the campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. The Chants will return to the Vista Links Golf Course on Nov. 2 for the Big South championship.
