CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Coastal Carolina senior Erica Peake has been named the 2013 Big South Track & Field Athlete of the Year as voted by the league's head coaches.
Peake is the fifth Chanticleer to garner the yearly honor and the first since 2005. She joins Angela Murphy (1997), Jolene Williams (1998, 1999), Amber Campbell (2001, 2003, 2004) and Chasity Johnson (2005) as Chants to earn the league's top track and field honor.
Peake, a Spartanburg, S.C., native, was named honorable mention All-American in two events during the outdoor season, second-team All-America during the indoor season and closed out the year with four indoor track Conference titles and two outdoor track and field titles.
During the indoor season, she was named the Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer at the 2013 Big South Championships. She placed first in the 60 meters with a time of 7.39, first in the 200 meters with a meet-record time of 24.07 and anchored her 4x400- meter relay squad to the crown with a time of 3:47.78. Her fourth title at the meet came off the track as she placed first in the long jump with a mark of 19' 2.75". Peake qualified for the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship and finished ninth in the 200-meter event with a time of 23.40 to earn second team All-America honors.
At the Big South Outdoor Championship, Peake claimed the gold medal in the long jump with a distance of 19' 4.0" and helped the 4x100-meter relay team to the championship as her team turned in a time of 45.50. She also finished second in the 100-meter event as she crossed the line in 11.61, while finishing second in the 100 meters with a time of 23.90. Peake led both Coastal Carolina's 4x400 and 4x100 meter relay teams to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where the squads earned honorable mention All-America plaudits.
