CONWAY - Both the Coastal Carolina men's and women's track and field teams will have representation at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, which will be contested Thursday through Saturday, May 29-31 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Sophomore Jessica Gelibert earned her second NCAA Preliminary Round (formerly known as the NCAA First and Second Rounds) appearance in the 400m hurdles. Gelibert enters the meet as the seventh seed after running a 57.07 400m hurdles at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University. Gelibert entered last year’s NCAA Preliminary Round as the seventh seed and ended up finishing 15th overall and just missed a trip to the NCAA Championship by three spots.
Junior Reggie Nelson will head to the NCAA Preliminary Round for the second time as well as he qualified 14th in the high jump after a leap of 2.16 meters at the Penn Relays. Nelson was the 43rd seed in the men’s high jump a season ago and finished tied for 13th just missing out on a trip to the NCAA Championship.
Gelibert’s teammate Christina Davis will also compete in the 400m hurdles as she qualified 45th after posting a time of 59.62 at the Aggie Last Chance Meet. Davis qualified for the 100m hurdles last season as the 48th seed.
The final individual qualifier is DeAndra Lipscomb who enters the NCAA Preliminary Round as the 45th seed in the men’s 400m. Lipscomb posted a qualifying time of 47.33 at the Georgia Tech Invitational last weekend.
Both the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams advanced to the NCAA Preliminary Round for the second straight year. The women enter as the 15th seed with a time of 3:35.73 which they ran at the Penn Relays. Gelibert, Camille Hurley, Christal Green and Teka Simpson will represent the Chants with Leah Fair as an alternate.
Lipscomb, Corey Hackett-Greene, Alexander Hass and Stevie Brunson will represent the Chants in the men’s 4x400m relay. The men posted a school-record time of 3:08.55 at the Georgia Tech Invitational which qualifies them 19th overall. Steve Carr and Russel Kanner will serve as alternates.
Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. will host the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 11-14. The top 12 finishers in each event at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet will advance to Eugene. They will be joined in Eugene by 12 qualifiers per event from the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round meet, which takes place in Fayetteville, Ark.
