LYNCHBURG, Va. - Freshman Jessica Gelibert of the Coastal Carolina women’s track and field team was named Big South Women’s Freshman of the Year after her outstanding performance at the Big South Conference Championships this past weekend. Junior Cameron Griggs of the men’s team was named to the Big South Men’s All-Academic Team and Emily Marchini of the women’s team was named to the Big South Women’s All-Academic Team.
Gelibert is the first Chanticleer to be awarded Big South Women’s Outdoor Freshman of the Year since 2007 when Shanta Johnson was given the honor. Gelibert was named All-Conference in two events as she won the 400 hurdles and was part of the 4x400 championship relay team. She had a record-breaking performance in the 400-meter hurdles and became the first Big South women’s track athlete to break the 58 second barrier in the event with a time of 57.86. She now ranks fifth in the East Region and 14th in the entire NCAA. She also picked up a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at the BSC Championships with a time of 13.91.
Griggs earned All-Conference honors in the discus with a third-place finish at the Big South Championships. He carries a 3.57 GPA and is majoring in exercise and sport science. Marchini was named All-Conference in both the 800 meters and 1500 meters as she finished second in both events at the championships. She has a 3.69 GPA while majoring in biology.
The Chanticleers will be back in action this weekend April 25-27 as they travel to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.
