CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Junior Russel Kanner and freshman Jessica Gelibert of the Coastal Carolina men’s and women’s track and field teams were named the Big South Conference Men’s and Women’s Track Athletes of the Week. This is Kanner’s and CCU’s first men’s Track Athlete of the Week award this season. This marks Gelibert’s first and CCU’s second women’s outdoor Track Athlete of the Week award after senior Erica Peake was given the nod last week.
Kanner finished the 400 hurdles at the Tiger Track Classic this past weekend with the second-fastest time in school history, 52.81. He was just .64 seconds off the school record time of 52.17. He also ran the third leg of the men's 4x400 team that crossed the finish line with the fastest time at CCU since 2007, 3:13.64, and finished fourth overall.
Gelibert was part of two record-breaking performances at the Tiger Track Classic. She set a new school record in the 400 hurdles as she bested the previous school record by three one-hundredths of a second with a fourth-place finish and a time of 58.64. The previous record holder was Ebony Brown who posted a time of 58.67 in 2006. Gelibert also ran the lead-off leg of CCU’s record-setting 4x400 team that finished third with a time of 3:38.24. The time bested the previous CCU record from 2012 by nearly two seconds. It also broke the Big South Conference record by .33 seconds set back in 2007 by Liberty. Gelibert also turned in a top-10 performance in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.04 while finishing ninth.
The track and field team will be back in action this Saturday, April 13 as the Chants host the Chanticleer Classic at the CCU Track & Field Facility.
