CHARLOTTE - Jessica Gelibert and Reggie Nelson of the Coastal Carolina University track & field team have been named the Big South Women’s Track Athlete of the Week and Big South Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, for their performances at the Shamrock Invitational last week, the league announced today. Gelibert’s award is the second-straight Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award for the Chanticleers, while Nelson becomes the first Chanticleer this season to earn a Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honor.
Gelibert, a sophomore from Bay Shore, N.Y., won the 400 meter hurdles at the Shamrock Invitational with a time of 58.39. Her time in the event is currently ranked No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in the East Region. She also ran a split of 54.1 in the 4x400 meter event to help her squad turn in the nation’s fourth-best time at 3:37.34. In the 4x800 meter race she posted a lead-off split of 2:15 to lead the team to a first-place finish and a No. 2 national ranking in the event with a time of 9:08.55.
Nelson, a redshirt-senior from Dillon, S.C., placed second in the high jump at the Shamrock Invitational with a jump of 6’ 10.75”. His mark is currently ranked No. 1 on the 2014 Big South Performance list.
