Coastal Women Unanimous Favorite, Men Second in Preseason Polls

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's track & field team was a unanimous pick to win the 2014 Big South Conference outdoor championship, while the men's team was selected second by the league's head coaches in the preseason polls released on Wednesday.

The Chanticleer women, who are looking for their third outdoor title in four years, received the full 100 points in the poll, while defending champion Liberty was second with 90 points. Campbell placed third with 75 points and Charleston Southern took fourth with 73. High Point came in fifth with 57 points, followed by Radford (49), Gardner-Webb (40), Winthrop (31), UNC Asheville (19) and VMI (17).

Coastal is looking to complete the women's triple crown for this academic year, having already won the cross country and indoor track conference titles in the fall and winter.

CCU's men claimed one first-place vote and totaled 86 points. Liberty led the way with the other nine first-place votes and 99 points. Campbell's men also took the No. 3 spot with 85 points and High Point was picked fourth with 69 points. Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb shared fifth with 49 points and were followed by VMI (57), Radford (35), Winthrop (21) and UNC Asheville (10).

The 2014 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held April 17-19 at Winthrop's Irwin Belk Track.

Coastal continues its outdoor season this week as it hosts the CCU Shamrock Invitational Thursday through Saturday at Doug Shaw Stadium.
