CONWAY - Following her record-breaking performance last weekend, Coastal Carolina's Erica Peake has been named the Big South Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, the league announced Wednesday.
Running in the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson, Peake established new Coastal and Big South Conference records in the 60-meter dash, clocking a time of 7.39 in a preliminary heat. The time was 0.04 seconds faster than the Big South mark of 7.43, which was held by Winthrop's Octavia Goode since 2002. The previous CCU record was 7.45, set by Chasity Johnson in 2007.
Peake now holds the CCU and Big South records in both the 60-meter dash and 200 meters. She broke her own school 200 mark and set a new Big South one of 23.96 last month at Virginia Tech. The previous conference record was 24.14 by Radford's Khadijah Conda and Charleston Southern's Gabrielle Houston.
The senior standout clocked 23.97 in the 200 Saturday while placing second at the Tiger Paw. With the flat-track conversion to 23.61, Peake is tied for 14th in the nation and is the only female Big South athlete to rank in the top 20 nationally in a running event. Her 60-meter time ranks tied for 26th in the country.
The native of Spartanburg, who also ranks first in the Big South in the long jump, now owns six weekly conference honors for her career.
The Coastal women's indoor track & field team is off this weekend as it continues preparations for the Big South Championship, which will be held February 21 and 22 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
