EUGENE, Ore. - The Coastal Carolina women’s track & field team’s 4x400 relay squad placed 22nd at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday evening. The Chants came in eighth in the second heat of the day while placing 22nd overall ahead of Pac 12 member Arizona State and SEC member Mississippi State.
The Chants registered their fourth-fastest time this season at 3:38.92 finishing just over 10 seconds behind leader Oregon. The team featured freshman Jessica Gelibert, sophomore Qwontajah Thompson, freshman Teka Simpson and senior Erica Peake.
The run ends a remarkable season by the quartet who made headlines by finishing first at the historic Penn Relays in the College Final. The squad ran a then school record time of 3:34.23. The four were not satisfied with just a Penn Relays Wagon Wheel as they went out and beat their own school record at the NCAA East Preliminary Round by finishing fifth with a time of 3:34.09. The time also bests the previous Big South Conference record by over six seconds.
Tonight’s run also ended the NCAA career of Erica Peake who led the Chants to the 2013 Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship and went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 200 meters. Peake was named 2012 Big South Track Athlete of the Year and was also named the 2012 Big South Outdoor Championships Most Outstanding Track Athlete. She was also named the 2013 Big South Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Track Athlete.
