GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Erica Peake highlighted Coastal Carolina's Friday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round track & field meet by advancing in the 200-meter competition at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track.
Peake ran her fourth-fastest time this season to advance to the quarterfinals, which will take place Saturday evening. Peake finished third in the third heat of the evening to punch her ticket to the quarterfinals. Her time of 23.70 ranked 16th among the field of 48.
Peake finished ahead of runners from Ohio State, Coppin State, Indiana and Kennesaw State in her heat, which was won by Hampton's Le'Quisha Parker in a time of 23.41, the fifth-fastest overall.
The top three finishers in each of Saturday's three quarterfinal heats, along with the next three best times advance to the NCAA national meet. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 7:35 p.m.
Freshman Jessica Gelibert placed 15th overall and seventh in her heat in the 400 meter hurdles quarterfinals to fall just three spots short of qualifying for the national meet. Gelibert's heat was won by Florida's Ugonna Ndu with a time of 57.08.
Freshman Jordan Entwistle placed ninth in his flight and 29th overall in the men's javelin with a toss of 62.60m (205-4). Junior Jackson Corcoran came in 12th in his flight and 41st overall with a distance of 59.31m (194-7). Morne Moolman of Florida State won the event with a throw of 75.17m (246-07).
Sophomore Christina Davis was the final Chant to compete on Saturday and she placed eighth in her heat and 45th overall in the 100 meter hurdles. She came across the line at 13.94. Brianna Rollins of Clemson won Davis' heat with a time of 12.72.
Action in the meet for Coastal Carolina resumes Saturday at 6 p.m., with the men's high jump, as Reggie Nelson competes. The women's 4x100 team will also be in action at 6 p.m. Peake will follow at 7:35 p.m. for the women's 200 meter quarterfinals. The final two events for the Chants will be the women's 4x400 and men's 4x400 teams at 9:25 and 9:45 p.m., respectively.
