GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Jessica Gelibert opened Coastal Carolina's participation in the NCAA East Preliminary Round track & field meet by advancing in the 400-meter hurdles competition Thursday evening at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track.
Gelibert posted the sixth-fastest time in the 48-runner field during the first-round heats to move on to the quarterfinals, which will take place Friday night. Running in the last of six heats, Gelibert clocked a season-best 57.83 to place second in the heat and sixth overall. The time was .03 faster than her previous best, recorded when she won the Big South Championship.
Gelibert finished ahead of runners from UAB, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, Virginia Tech and Penn State in her heat, which was won by Indiana State's Stacia Weatherford in a time of 57.74, the fifth-fastest overall. The top four finishers in the first round were Clemson's Kendra Harrison, UCF's Sandy Jean-Claude, South Carolina's Tyler Brockington and LSU's Nikita Tracey.
The top three finishers in each of Friday's three quarterfinal heats, along with the next three best times advance to the NCAA national meet. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 7:35 p.m.
Action in the meet for Coastal Carolina resumes Friday at noon, with the men's javelin, as Jackson Corcoran and Jordan Entwistle compete. Christina Davis will run in the 100-meter hurdles at 5 p.m., followed by Erica Peake in the 200 meters at 8 p.m.
