Coastal Opens Strong at VertKlasse Meeting
HIGH POINT, N.C. - Coastal Carolina's men's and women's track teams both jumped out to a fast start to the outdoor season, with several new school records set and over a dozen CCU top 10 all-time marks tallied in only the first four meets.
This weekend, in the fifth meet of the outdoor season, the Chants looked to keep the momentum going with a strong showing at the eighth annual VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University's Vert Track, Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
The VertKlasse Meeting is a European-style meet that features a small number of elite competitors, which makes for a fast-moving, exciting day of action. The meet kicked off Friday afternoon with a handful of running events such as the men's and women's 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs, as well as field events including the women's and women's shot put, javelin, high jump and pole vault.
If the opening day of competition was any indication, Coastal has only scratched the surface of its record-breaking, history-making potential. On Day One of the meet, the Chants impressed with several top 10 finishes, both in track and field events.
Kyla van Graan got the afternoon off to a rollicking start with a fifth-place finish in the women's 1500-meter race, crossing the finish line at 4:37.23.
Elsewhere, Rachel Byrd placed eighth in the women's 10,000-meter run. The redshirt sophomore finished at 39:44.26, outpacing the rest of the competition by over 29 seconds.
In field action, Zach Bolton advanced to the finals of the men's shot put, taking ninth-place with a throw of 15.18m (49-9.75).
Additionally, Coastal had two athletes place in the top 10 in the men's javelin, as Robert Castellani (63.54m, 208-5) finished second and Cody Wilde (55.73, 182-10) came in ninth. Castellani and Wilde both set personal-best marks with their throws, and the former moved to No. 5 all-time for CCU in the men's javelin.
The VertKlasse Meeting continues April 2, with events slated to begin at 9 a.m. Next weekend, the Chants travel to Greenville, N.C., for the Bill Carson Invitational. Action is set for April 8 and 9 at East Carolina University.
