Chants Capture Mayor's Relay Cup at Shamrock Invitational

MYRTLE BEACH - The Coastal Carolina men's and women's track and field team picked up three more victories on the final day of the Shamrock Invitational. Sophomore Joseph Wilson led the way with a win in the 200 meters while freshman Vanita Pulliam took home the crown in the women's long jump "B" flight. The women's 4x400 team took first as well.
The women's team captured the Mayor's Relay Cup thanks to their wins in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays and second-place finishes in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays.
Wilson, who was the lone Chant to qualify in the 100 meters, took the 200 meter race with a time of 21.36. Wilson finished sixth in the 100 meter finals with a time of 10.62. Pulliam took first in the "B" flight of the long jump with a distance of 5.45 meters (17-10.75). Junior Keegan Woodson took third in the same event with a jump of 5.42 meters (17-9.50) while freshman Raven Hamilton finished sixth.
The 4x400 team consisting of freshman Jessica Gelibert, sophomore Qwontajah Thompson, freshman Teka Simpson and senior Erica Peake took first in the race with a time of 3:41.33 just under a second more than the meet record. The women's 4x100 team of senior Darriale Henley, Peake, Simpson and Thompson took second in the 4x100 with a time of 46.06 finishing behind Ohio State University.
Thompson took second in the 400 meters with a time of 54.88 just .73 hundredths off the top pace. Freshman Jessica Gelibert took third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.87 while winning her heat. Junior Shelby Nicosia and junior Emily Marchini finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 3000 meters. Nicosia finished the race with a time of 10:11.74 while Marchini crossed the finish line in 10:22.30.
Freshman Brinson Corn finished tied for third in the men's pole vault "B" flight with a height of 4.30 meters (14-1.25). Junior JaDarrell Barnette tied for fourth in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.97 meters (49-1.50). Sophomore Reggie Nelson finished fifth in the men's high jump with a height of 2.05 meters (6-8.75). Junior Cameron Griggs rounded out CCU's top performers with a fifth-place showing in the men's discus with a toss of 47.80 meters (156-10).
The Chants will return to action March 22-23 at the High Point University VertKlasse Meeting.
