Chants Open Up Season with Battle of the Beaches Victory

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men’s track & field team opened its 2013 season with a 103.5-102.5 victory over UNC Wilmington in the annual Battle of the Beaches event. The Chants evened the series to 4-4 with the victory. Last season’s Battle of the Beaches meet was cancelled due to weather but the Chants have won the event four times including 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013. This year’s event featured the closest score in Battle of the Beaches history.

Coastal picked up a victory in the very first event of the day as sophomore Joseph Keitt won the 2000 meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 6:11.22. Freshman Desmond Wallace picked up Coastal’s next victory in the 110 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.48.

CCU then produced a one-two finish in the 400 meter dash as sophomore DeAndra Lipscomb and freshman Deion Wellington led the field across the finish line. Lipscomb had a personal best time of 48.75 while Wellington came across in 49.68. Freshman Matthew Lights then won the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.32 besting the field by .12 of a second.

The Chants produced another one-two finish in the 200 meter dash as sophomore Joseph Wilson and freshman Corey Hackett-Greene led the way, Wilson finished with a time of 21.87 while Hackett-Greene had a time of 22.25 just .03 better than the third-place finisher.

Keitt returned to the top of the podium in the 3000 meter run as he topped the competition by 11 seconds with a time of 9:01.04.

CCU’s 4x400 meter relay team produced CCU’s next victory as Wellington, Wilson, Lights and Lipscomb teamed up to win the race by just under five seconds with a time of 3:15.86.

In the field events junior Cameron Griggs took home the hammer throw crown with a personal best throw of 54.11 meters. Sophomore Reggie Nelson and freshman Wesley Edwards had the Chants’ third one-two finish of the day in the high jump. Nelson led with a jump of 2.05 meters while Edwards finished at 1.90 meters. Griggs also took home the shot put with a personal best throw of 15.46 meters.

CCU’s fourth and final one-two finish of the day came in the discus as freshman Jordan Roach and Griggs finished atop the field. Roach had a personal best throw of 48.96 meters while Griggs finished second with a throw of 46.07 meters.

The Chants will return to action this Friday and Saturday as CCU hosts the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach.
