BLACKSBURG, Va. - Erica Peake notched her second 60-meter dash win of the season and the Coastal Carolina women's indoor track & field team posted four top-five finishes during Friday's first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
Peake clocked a personal-best 7.46 to take the 60-meter event by .02 seconds over East Carolina's Tania Minkins. The senior standout's time was .06 seconds faster than her winning time at last month's Orange & Purple Winter Classic at Clemson.
Senior Anjulia Nicholson and junior Ashley Davis both set personal-bests to earn third-place finishes. Nicholson recorded a throw of 17.05 meters (55-11.25) on her third of six attempts in the weight throw. The distance was more than four feet better than her previous best, set two seasons ago. Davis posted a time of 8.65 in the 60-meter hurdles, beating her previous best by .03 seconds.
Jessica Gelibert also set a personal-best of 1:14.54 to finish fifth in the 500 meters. The freshman, who was the national high school champion in the 400 meters, bettered her 500-meter time of 1:15.62 that she used to win at Clemson.
Also for the Chanticleers, freshmen Amirah Al-Bayyinah and Kelila Naules placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the triple jump. Al-Bayyinah had a leap of 11.83 meters (38-9.75), while Naules recorded a top leap of 11.28 meters (37-00.25). Additionally, junior Gabrielle Lee finished eighth out of 25 competitors in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.78.
Duke, Tennessee and Charlotte are among the 15 teams represented in the meet, which resumes Saturday at 11 a.m.
