CONWAY - The Coastal Carolina University Department of Athletics has enjoyed a great spring season on the playing fields. However, the Department's primary goal was achieved on May 10 as 36 current and former Chanticleers participated in graduation exercises.
Combined with the 17 student-athletes who graduated in December 2013 and the 14 on track to graduate in this summer, a total of 67 Chanticleers are set to receive their degrees from Coastal Carolina University for the academic year.
Eight Chanticleers graduated with honors this spring, including women's golfer Courtney Boe (magna cum laude), football's Cody Craig (cum laude), women's tennis' Dominique De Wit (summa cum laude), men's track & field's Cameron Griggs (cum laude), men's soccer's Jakub Stourac (cum laude), volleyball's Meghan Laffin (magna cum laude), women's cross country/track & field's Emily Marchini (magna cum laude) and Shelby Nicosia (cum laude).
Boe (management), Craig (physical education) and football's Chad Hamilton (middle level education) were honored with Academic Departmental Awards. Departmental awards recognize students who have shown outstanding academic accomplishments and have contributed to the academic quality of the department. Candidates are nominated and selected by the college faculty.
Football's Brian Kass, who graduated from Wofford in 2013 before playing his final collegiate season with the Chanticleers this past fall, and CCU student-athlete and current men's soccer assistant coach Kyle Russell received their Master of Business Administration degrees.
Overall, Coastal Carolina's 394 student-athletes have a cumulative GPA of 3.083, with 211 earning a GPA between of 3.0 or better for the 2014 spring semester. Furthermore, 32 student-athletes earned President's List recognition (4.0 for the semester) and 97 student-athletes earned Dean's List recognition (3.25 GPA for the semester for freshmen and 3.5 for upperclassmen).
All 10 of Coastal Carolina women's athletics programs recorded a team GPA above 3.0 for the academic year as 105 of the 160 female student-athletes posed a GPA of 3.0 or better for this past spring. On the men's side, five of the eight programs own a team cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better with one squad standing at 2.988 and the other two programs' team GPA are above 2.8. A total of 106 of the 234 male student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0 or better this past spring.
