Kimbel Arena is home to the Chanticleer men's and women's basketball teams and the volleyball team.  The 1,039-seat arena offers an intimate setting that provides Coastal Carolina with one of the top home court advantages in the Big South Conference.

The history of Kimbel Arena dates back to the early 1970s when the vision of an on-campus arena began to materialize with the generous posthumous donation to the University of South Carolina by Martha Williams-Brice. The decision as to where the donation was to be allocated fell upon Brice's nephews, Thomas and Phillip Edwards.

As Conway High School graduates, the Edwards brothers felt a sense of loyalty to the community and their former football coach, Dick Singleton, and announced a bequest of $250,000 toward the construction of the Williams-Brice Health and Fine Arts Building at Coastal Carolina College.

The project faced a major hurdle as the lowest bid came in $100,000 over budget. Rather than allow cuts in the project, longtime Coastal benefactor William A. Kimbel offered to make up the difference. In honor of this gesture, the project steering committee decided to name the gymnasium portion of the building for Kimbel.

Kimbel Gymnasium was dedicated in November 1972 by the legendary Frank McGuire and the University of South Carolina basketball team.  The 1974-1975 season was Coastal's first competitive season as a four-year school, and the Chanticleers began the transition into NAIA membership.

The arena underwent several renovations since its opening in 1972.  There have been floor replacements several times throughout the years, starting with a tartan-like surface when the building opened.  Years later the floor was converted over to wood and eventually the portable floor used currently was installed during the 2001-02 season.

There was also a seat renovation prior to the 1999-2000 season in which the current teal seats were installed and the TV platform was erected to support broadcasts.  That same year, new scorer's tables were installed with rotational sponsorship signage.

Kimbel Arena has served as the home to 10 Big South Championship teams and will be replaced by the new Convocation/Recreation Center in 2012 after 41 seasons.
